Oujiang color common carp---a “Bright Pearl” deeply slept over thousand years, a new exploiting aquaculture species.
Oujiang color common carp is a regional species in Oujiang river basin and has been cultured more than 1200 years. This fish has a rapid growth rate, high quality meat，especially its scale is soft and delicious, which makes high value in all aquatic food. Meanwhile, this fish is characterized by a variety of body colors making it great potential to develop as ornamental species.
In order to increase scientific and technical level of the studies on genetic characters, reservation, exploitation and development on Oujiang color common carp, a cooperation project has been conducted by Shanghai Fisheries University and the government of Longquan city to research its genetics and accelerate its exploitation. By now, its table strain with faster growth and high production, and ornamental strain with more beautiful color are available.
